Chapel and wellbeing

St. Joseph of Nazareth High School was founded on Catholic values. Faith is part of who we are, and so is the care of every student. Students of all faiths are welcome here and are respected as full members of the school.

More than books and exams

We believe education is about more than passing exams. It is also about building good character, a clear conscience and a sense of purpose. That belief comes from the Catholic values the school was founded on, and it still guides how we teach and care for students.

Wellbeing here means the whole student. The school clinic looks after their health. Teachers and the chaplain listen and guide. And every student belongs to a community that shares the same values of respect, honesty and service, even where personal beliefs differ.

"We educate the whole person: mind, character and spirit. That has been our promise since the school began."

The school chapel at St. Joseph of Nazareth High School

One school, many faiths

The school is Catholic, and it makes room for every student to practise their own faith.

Catholic students

Catholic students find a community that shares and grows their faith.

  • Mass in the school chapel during the term
  • Religious Education as part of the timetable
  • Advent, Lent, Easter and feast days marked through the year
  • The chaplain is there for prayer, guidance and a quiet talk
  • Help with preparing for the sacraments for those who need it

Muslim students and other faiths

Students of other faiths are welcome and respected.

  • Time and a place set aside for Muslim students to pray
  • Ramadan and other important Islamic days respected
  • No student is made to take part in Catholic worship or sacraments
  • Students of other Christian churches are welcome
  • Teachers and the chaplain support students of every faith

More about faith at school

  1. 1
The chaplainThe chaplain leads Mass and prayer, and is also someone any student can go to for advice or a quiet talk. Students of every faith are welcome to see the chaplain.
  2. 2
Mass and the church yearMass is said in the school chapel during the term. Advent, Lent, Easter and feast days, including the feast of St. Joseph, are times to celebrate and reflect together.
  3. 3
Religious EducationReligious Education is taught at O Level. At A Level, students can choose Divinity as one of their subjects.
  4. 4
Values in daily lifeRespect for every person, caring for others and serving the community are not only taught in class. They guide how students treat each other, how prefects lead, and how the school works with the people of Kavule and Mpigi.
  1. 1
Daily prayer for Muslim studentsMuslim students are given time and a place to pray. Plans for Friday prayers are shared with students at the start of each term.
  2. 2
RamadanDuring Ramadan, the school makes arrangements for students who are fasting, including meal times, and staff are asked to support them with care.
  3. 3
Worship is a choiceStudents who are not Catholic are not required to receive the sacraments or take part in Catholic worship. When they join school Masses, it is as members of the school family.
  4. 4
Shared valuesHonesty, service, respect, hard work and care for others are taught by every major faith. These are the values we build in all our students.

For parents: if your child is not Catholic, they will be respected, given room to practise their faith and included as a full member of the school. You are welcome to visit and see for yourself.

  1. 1
Good characterA student who is honest, disciplined and keeps going when things are hard tends to do better in class over time. Character is also what stays with them after the exams are over.
  2. 2
A sense of purposeStudents who know why they are in school work harder and cope better under pressure. Faith, in whatever tradition, gives many students that reason.
  3. 3
BelongingA student who feels known and cared for is happier and safer. Praying and celebrating together helps students feel they belong.
  4. 4
Right choicesUniversities, workplaces and communities need people who are good as well as skilled. We help students learn to make right choices, even when no one is watching.
Inside the school chapel
  • Quiet prayer: students can use the chapel for personal prayer and quiet time. Students of any faith are welcome to sit there quietly.
  • Mass and services: Mass, feast days and big school moments such as the opening and closing of the year are held here.
  • Talking to the chaplain: many students find it easier to talk in the calm of the chapel than in an office.
  • Praying together: the school gathers to pray before exams, in hard times and to give thanks.
